Types of Modulation
You are here: Main > Intro to Two-Way Radio > Types of Modulation
Analog voice and digital signals are transmitted through radio frequency by adding these signals to a radio carrier wave through a process called modulation.
There are two types of modulation: analog and digital. P25 digital is the suite of standards for digital mobile radio communications designed for use by public safety organizations in North America.
Analog
-

Analog modulation has been the primary technology used in two-way radio communications since the origin of it’s development (AM, FM).
 -

Transmits natural, analog voice signal.
 -

Majority of radio systems still operate in analog mode, fire departments generally prefer them.

P25 Digital
                  -

P25 digital is a newer technology, developed within the last 20 years.
 -

It offers signal encryption, secure communications and better voice quality by eliminating background noise in weak signal areas.
 -

It is mostly preferred by law enforcement.
